Narrabeen Aquatic Reserve

Woke up nice and early at 0430 to train at the gym at 0530 – i figured since sunrise was at 0647 i may as well pack my camera gear and head down to the beach for a shoot, allowing me ample time to drive down there, set up and have a chat to the people out exercising on such a lovely morning.  The weather was nice and warm, perfect for shooting – no chilly wind to knock the tripod around.

The one thing I noticed was how polite people were, I was taking up the entire walkway with my tripod and my f-stop bag splayed over the footpath, nobody seemed to mind much, they paused, then asked me if they could walk in front of the camera.  The guy who was walking down the walkway (the one in the shot) noticed I was getting a bit dismayed as he was right in my shot and wearing red which would have been hard to photoshop out and then make the pier look perfect again, so he hurried up and apologised when he got to the end – totally unnecessary, but so nice to know that the Northern Beaches is full of gorgeous people!

Oh and they had the audacity to tell me that I should have been down here yesterday as the sunrise was sweet as…. grrrr…. didn’t need to know that 🙂

I got loads of shots, but this was my favourite panoramic, will upload an individual shot later.

Collaroy Beach

Taken at Collaroy Beach last night after sunset.  The tungsten lighting presents an issue when editing these shots, as it puts an orange/magenta cast over the image, but it can also work quite well.  I think I prefer this lighting effect for dawn rather than dusk, as the light is a lot softer and it compliments the environment.  Gorgeous evening to be out shooting, nice warm breeze, loads of people out swimming, running and just enjoying what is left of the “summer” weather.  If the cloud cover wasn’t so heavy I would have stuck around to shoot some star trails.

MacMasters Beach Sunrise

What a gorgeous morning to be up at 3:50am for… pink cotton wool clouds, nice and warm and a stunning sunrise…  I met up with Danny & Jasiah pre-dawn hoping to capture something like this… so glad I got up and headed up the coast – its mornings like this that make it all worthwhile…

Narrabeen Tidal Pool

A shot I took back on 28 July 2010, retouched it today as I didn’t like my original processing – I have already sold a few of this image on canvas, but recently printed one on aluminium and it looked awesome – I think I may get one printed for my wall in the office…

Mona Vale Baths

The weather in Sydney has been shocking – constant rain, four seasons in one week, its cold but spring – which makes it so hard to try to plan photo shoots.  At around 5:30pm I had a look outside and the clouds look menacing, so I headed down to Mona Vale Baths, a location I dare not take my two little kids with me (cross waves and unpredictable tides).  It was raining very heavily when I was driving down to the Northern Beaches, but thought I may catch a gap in the weather – not so lucky.  I braved it and headed out anyway.  The only way I could get a shot was with my Lee Big Stopper 10, wiping the rain drops off the filter every 30 seconds to try to get a clean shot – yes, I forgot my umbrella…

Needless to say, I got washed by the waves to my knees in my jeans, my gortex boots kept my feet dry (amazingly) and I managed to capture this shot in around 60 seconds.  Miserable day to be out shooting, but I figure, there is no challenge shooting on perfect days all the time – shoot nature from different angles, learn in all elements and broaden the portfolio…  Got home frozen, popped my gear in the washing machine, threw on a dress and headed off for pizza/wine at Manly with some friends and then a movie, hence the very late edit/post.

However, my 4am wake-up for a sunrise shoot will be postponed until Sunday (as waking up to torrential rain is not so tempting at that early hour).

My final pre-dawn image from this morning at Collaroy – will definitely be heading back here to grab a pink/purple sunrise soon, nice location and loads of compositions to shoot!

Collaroy Ocean Baths

The colours were so vibrant at dawn this morning, no pink sunrise, but the blues were worth the 4am wake-up!  Nice & warm, nearly warm enough for a morning dip!

Was down at Collaroy Ocean Baths this morning waiting for sunrise and saw these lines on the bath steps – thought it would be something different…
