Narrabeen Aquatic Reserve

Woke up nice and early at 0430 to train at the gym at 0530 – i figured since sunrise was at 0647 i may as well pack my camera gear and head down to the beach for a shoot, allowing me ample time to drive down there, set up and have a chat to the people out exercising on such a lovely morning.  The weather was nice and warm, perfect for shooting – no chilly wind to knock the tripod around.

The one thing I noticed was how polite people were, I was taking up the entire walkway with my tripod and my f-stop bag splayed over the footpath, nobody seemed to mind much, they paused, then asked me if they could walk in front of the camera.  The guy who was walking down the walkway (the one in the shot) noticed I was getting a bit dismayed as he was right in my shot and wearing red which would have been hard to photoshop out and then make the pier look perfect again, so he hurried up and apologised when he got to the end – totally unnecessary, but so nice to know that the Northern Beaches is full of gorgeous people!

Oh and they had the audacity to tell me that I should have been down here yesterday as the sunrise was sweet as…. grrrr…. didn’t need to know that 🙂

I got loads of shots, but this was my favourite panoramic, will upload an individual shot later.

Technical Specs: 11 march 2011, 6:54am, iso100, f/14, 0.6 sec, 24mm, canon l series 24-70mm lens, canon 1d mark iv, 9 images stitched

Collaroy Beach

Taken at Collaroy Beach last night after sunset.  The tungsten lighting presents an issue when editing these shots, as it puts an orange/magenta cast over the image, but it can also work quite well.  I think I prefer this lighting effect for dawn rather than dusk, as the light is a lot softer and it compliments the environment.  Gorgeous evening to be out shooting, nice warm breeze, loads of people out swimming, running and just enjoying what is left of the “summer” weather.  If the cloud cover wasn’t so heavy I would have stuck around to shoot some star trails.

Technical specs: 9 march 2011, 1940hr, iso100, f/13, 24mm, 15 secs, 5 images stitched, ps cs5, canon l series 24-70mm, lee soft grad filter 0.6, canon 1d mk iv

Gorgeous Byron Bay

Was keen to get a nice sunset to start off my Byron shots, but I got there a bit early and the sunset was nice but not intense.  This was my favourite shot of the day.  Shot it on my new Canon 1D Mark IV and it is an absolutely beautiful piece of equipment – was a bit stuck on a few settings, but once I got the manual out and figured out how basic it really was, and where all the buttons were, it was so simple to use and this was the result.  I love it!!!

Technical: 6:49pm, 9 February 2011, iso 100,  85 sec, 16mm, f/13, 16-35mm, lee soft grad filter 0.6, lee big stopper 10, canon 1d mark iv

North Avoca Sunset

Went down to North Avoca with Tim Bolger to shoot sunset.  Took a while to find a comp that I liked.  As the sun was setting I had my big stopper on and missed the pink clouds, but I got this just before sunset.  Definitely a place I will be heading back to and reshoot, maybe a sunrise next time… (now I know how to find the place).

Forresters at Dusk – Panoramic

My panoramic is finally manually stitched from last night’s shoot.  This is a series of 8 shots taken in portrait orientation.  Specs: f/18, ISO100, 10 secs per frame, 24mm, 8:13pm-8:15pm, 18 January 2011.  I thought I would upload something different from Forresters – I have a few seascape shots as well, but will upload those as they are processed.  Hope you like this one.

Forresters at Dusk!

It’s about time I got back out on the beaches to shoot some seascapes.  I met up with Danny, Tim and Jasiah down at Forresters Beach on the Central Coast to capture tonight’s sunset.  The cloud was a bit thick to filter much colour through, so it was an overcast shoot – but still so nice to shoot Forresters – always something different to compose.  I found my favourite rock to shoot and this is the first out of a few shots that I got tonight.

Technical Specs: f/14, 10 sec, 8:17pm, 24mm, lee grad filter 0.9, 24-70mm l series, canon 5d mark ii

Chrysalis

My nephew, Andrew found this outside of the unit I am staying at.  It was so gold and green I just had to get an image of it.  Will see what it looks like tomorrow… maybe it’ll be gone…

Broadwater “Body” of Water

Happy New Year!  Thought I would see the New Year in differently this year, went out and saw the fireworks at Broadbeach and decided to set the alarm for 3:50am to see the first day of the New Year in properly with a sunrise shoot.  The sky didn’t turn out as I was hoping, it looked pinkish at around 4:00am but the cloud cover and wind picked up and I got a dreary/wet sunrise shoot, but still nice to get up that early on the 01/01/11.  This photograph is a 3 image stitch, shot at 4:29am, f/13, 90secsx3, ISO100, 24mm, canon 5d mkii, lee soft grad filter 0.6.

If you look to the left of the image to the top right of the swimming enclosure, there is a lump in the water, I didn’t think much about it until I got back to my MacBook and blew up the image to 100%.  It looked like a man lying face down in the water, dark hair, blue shorts, brown t-shirt.  Thought I had better ring it in just in case.  Maybe he had too hard of a night to see in the New Year.  Luckily, I was told that it was just the tie down for the swimming float fence.  Much to my relief and embarrassment 🙂

The weather is nice and hot today so I may head out for a sunset shoot tonight… no floods here which is a good thing 🙂
