Woke up nice and early at 0430 to train at the gym at 0530 – i figured since sunrise was at 0647 i may as well pack my camera gear and head down to the beach for a shoot, allowing me ample time to drive down there, set up and have a chat to the people out exercising on such a lovely morning. The weather was nice and warm, perfect for shooting – no chilly wind to knock the tripod around.
The one thing I noticed was how polite people were, I was taking up the entire walkway with my tripod and my f-stop bag splayed over the footpath, nobody seemed to mind much, they paused, then asked me if they could walk in front of the camera. The guy who was walking down the walkway (the one in the shot) noticed I was getting a bit dismayed as he was right in my shot and wearing red which would have been hard to photoshop out and then make the pier look perfect again, so he hurried up and apologised when he got to the end – totally unnecessary, but so nice to know that the Northern Beaches is full of gorgeous people!
Oh and they had the audacity to tell me that I should have been down here yesterday as the sunrise was sweet as…. grrrr…. didn’t need to know that 🙂
I got loads of shots, but this was my favourite panoramic, will upload an individual shot later.

Every time I come to the Gold Coast, I relax too much and don’t get out and shoot enough, I thought today was a good day to set the alarm for 4:20am and head off to Currumbin Rock to get a nice sunrise shoot in. Didn’t think I would make it as it was getting pretty light as I was driving past Palm Beach and was tempted to just get a beach shot in, but that’s not my style, so I kept on driving. My 4-yr old son begged to come last night, so I woke him up at 4:25 and he reluctantly made it to the car and went back to sleep. I hiked out to location with my 15kg backpack on (all my gear in it) and my 16kg son on my hip. Thank god, I have been going to the gym or I would have been dead once I got there. The sun took forever to come up, it was supposed to be sunrise at 5:28am, but it didn’t seem to breach the horizon til around 5:40am, which is when I got this shot. Not an overly exciting sunrise to say the least, but I’m happy with the shot. Loads of keen fishermen up at this early hour. Technical notes: 5:40am, 14 february 2011, iso100, f/13, 1/5 sec, 24mm, 24-70mm canon l series lens, lee soft grad filter 0.9, canon 1d mark iv
Happy Valentines Day!!!

Not a very good morning for shooting sunrise, the cloud was very thick and high on the horizon, not letting the light through til way after sunrise. The light was still nice pre-sunrise and I will process another shot, this time in colour soon. Image can be purchased, by clicking on the photo
Happy New Year! Thought I would see the New Year in differently this year, went out and saw the fireworks at Broadbeach and decided to set the alarm for 3:50am to see the first day of the New Year in properly with a sunrise shoot. The sky didn’t turn out as I was hoping, it looked pinkish at around 4:00am but the cloud cover and wind picked up and I got a dreary/wet sunrise shoot, but still nice to get up that early on the 01/01/11. This photograph is a 3 image stitch, shot at 4:29am, f/13, 90secsx3, ISO100, 24mm, canon 5d mkii, lee soft grad filter 0.6.
If you look to the left of the image to the top right of the swimming enclosure, there is a lump in the water, I didn’t think much about it until I got back to my MacBook and blew up the image to 100%. It looked like a man lying face down in the water, dark hair, blue shorts, brown t-shirt. Thought I had better ring it in just in case. Maybe he had too hard of a night to see in the New Year. Luckily, I was told that it was just the tie down for the swimming float fence. Much to my relief and embarrassment 🙂
The weather is nice and hot today so I may head out for a sunset shoot tonight… no floods here which is a good thing 🙂

What a gorgeous morning to be up – I was watching an orange/pink sunset last night and was determined to capture a sunrise since I haven’t been out shooting for ages. Headed down to Turimetta and on the way down Mona Vale Road, saw the sky going pink at around 4:40am – pretty excited at this point, knew it was going to be a cracker… Texted a few photographers to get up and shoot it!
Sunrise wasn’t until 5:41am, but the photo opportunities started close to 5:00am and the light was pretty much gone by 5:20am. Didn’t stick around to watch the sunrise as I got my shots in the first 10 exposures. Stunning morning to be up nice and early. Will process some panoramics later on today, but just wanted to get this one up on the internet…
What a gorgeous morning to be up at 3:50am for… pink cotton wool clouds, nice and warm and a stunning sunrise… I met up with Danny & Jasiah pre-dawn hoping to capture something like this… so glad I got up and headed up the coast – its mornings like this that make it all worthwhile…
A shot I took back on 28 July 2010, retouched it today as I didn’t like my original processing – I have already sold a few of this image on canvas, but recently printed one on aluminium and it looked awesome – I think I may get one printed for my wall in the office…
